Advanced Gut Health Consultations

Need some guidance on your gut health journey? Here’s where you get started.

My background

I received my bachelor’s degree in Biology with honors from Kalamazoo College and my PhD in Nutritional Sciences from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. My graduate research focused on the effects of diet and exercise on the gut microbiota in health and disease.

For the last six years, I have spent hours each week reading the scientific literature, finding actionable insights that can help people struggling with gut issues. I worked and studied for several years under Chris Kresser, a globally recognized leader in functional and integrative medicine, and currently serve as staff research associate for the Kresser Institute for Functional & Evolutionary Medicine.

I am not a doctor. My goal is to use the information I’ve learned through my own health journey, my graduate research, and my independent study of the scientific literature to empower you with the information you need to improve your gut and overall health.

I can’t guarantee that I have all the answers. I do guarantee that if I don’t have an immediate answer, I’ll dive into the literature and try my absolute best to find it for you. I always seek to provide evidence-based recommendations.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why should I work with you?

  • There is a lot of misleading information out there. It took me several years of wading through piles of scientific medical and nutrition literature to regain my health. I want to share all that I’ve learned from my own personal journey, my education in nutritional sciences, and my work in the functional and integrative medicine space so that you can get the information you need to regain your health without the agony and uncertainty. I spend hours reading scientific literature every week to ensure that I am providing the absolute best care and recommendations to my clients.
  • I know firsthand how hard it can be to deal with a chronic health condition. There were many times when I didn’t even know if I would recover, was embarrassed to go out in public, or just broke down completely. I know how important it is to have someone listen to your concerns and actually care. I’m here to listen and help, without passing judgment.
  • You need a genuine advocate for your health. While I love the human and personalized care aspect of functional medicine, I also love digging in and putting all of the data together to work out the root cause. I can’t guarantee that I have all the answers – but I can guarantee that if I don’t have an immediate answer, I’ll dive into the scientific literature and try my absolute best to find it. I always seek to provide evidence for my recommendations.

What credentials do you have?

I received my Bachelors in Biology with a concentration in Neuroscience and a minor in Psychology from Kalamazoo College in 2015. I then went on to receive my PhD in Nutritional Sciences from the University of Illinois in 2019. I was recently recognized by the American Society of Nutrition as an Emerging Leader in Nutrition Sciences and my work has been featured in a number of peer-reviewed journals. My dissertation research focuses on the effects of diet and exercise on the gut microbiome in states of health and disease.

I also worked part-time as a staff research associate and content contributor for Chris Kresser, a globally recognized leader in functional and integrative medicine and founder of the Kresser Institute for Functional and Evolutionary Medicine. I am not a licensed medical doctor, and none of my recommendations should be taken as medical advice.

Are your consults online or do I have to come to you?

All consults are virtual and take place on your choice of phone call or Zoom video meeting.

Can you order or suggest specific lab tests?

I am not a licensed MD and cannot order lab tests. During your consultation, we will discuss the merits of different tests for your specific case, which you can then order through your personal physician or direct-to-consumer.

Currently, I recommend Genova GI Effects Comprehensive Stool Profile (available via physician order or direct-to-consumer through directlabs.com) or the Thorne Gut Health Test (available direct-to-consumer) for those who are interested in profiling their gut health and have not already done so. If you already have gut health data from other companies, I am happy to review any results you already have. I have no affiliation with any gut testing companies.

Will your suggestions involve supplements?

In some cases, we will discuss supplements that might be useful. I do not have any affiliation with any supplement manufacturers. If I mention a particular brand or product, it is only because I have identified it as reputable and worth considering through my own independent research.

I am a pretty complex case, will you be able to help me?

While it’s unlikely that I will miraculously solve a long-time health problem in your first appointment, I can almost always provide you with a new angle or direction to try that you haven’t considered yet. More than half of my clients are complex cases. If I’m truly not able to help you or provide some new insight, I’ll happily refund your payment in full.

Do you offer email support?

Unfortunately, I am not currently able to offer email support to clients. My priority right now is staying up-to-date with the latest research and treatments, and creating content that can help people on a larger scale, which often means spending days or even weeks away from my inbox. If you need further direction, you’re always welcome to use my scheduling page to book another appointment.

How much should I expect this to cost?

My hourly rate for consultations is $700. Outside of my paid SubStack membership and a few online courses, consultations are my only income. At the moment, I cannot offer half-hour or otherwise prorated appointments but may consider offering these in the future.

Ultimately, my mission is to make integrative gut health to be accessible to everyone. I remember all too well what it was like to be a full-time student with little disposable income in need of serious direction with my health.

Thus, a great deal of my time right now is dedicated to building advanced, evidence-based gut courses that are scalable and affordable, in addition to continuing to produce the free content available on my blog. Those who choose to consult with me will be directly supporting these efforts.

Is any of it covered by insurance?

Unfortunately, our current healthcare system does not value preventive medicine. As I am not a licensed practitioner, I cannot bill your insurance. You will receive a receipt when you book your appointment, but my consults are not diagnostic or therapeutic in nature.

Some lab tests may be able to be justified as diagnostic and therefore partly covered by insurance if you go through your physician. Whenever possible, I will work with you to find these options. If cost is an issue, we can also talk about how to alter your plan of action accordingly to just focus on the essentials.
